"polarized bear", embossing on somerset paper,
image size 15 X 20 cm, edition of 12.

One of the outstanding pictures in the 2009 wildlife photography competition at the Natural History Museum was of a polar bear silhouetted by the rising sun. The picture was taken by Miguel Lasa , his web site is full of wonderful wildlife photographs. The shot of the bear made me think of its fragile existence, and I wanted to make a print of capturing the disappearance of the species, this is it. An embossed white bear in a white background.

It is very difficult to make the bear out in the print, but that I think is the point. It will soon be very difficult to see a polar bear, we are destroying their environment.

Because the print is so difficult to photograph I have make a representation of in in pencil which is what you see here.

The photography competition, Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year, is held annually and is always outstanding I would recommend everyone to go and see it, exhibition website.
